I arrived at the spa just before one o’clock, but at least I wouldn’t have to work. The snooty woman on the desk said I couldn’t check in until three o’clock as the room wasn’t ready. I suspected that might happen, and just asked for somewhere to leave my bag. I would find a place to relax whilst I waited. She took my bag and gave me directions to the orangery, which had a coffee shop looking over the beautiful grounds. It was unusual to get such picturesque views when the spa was in a busy city, so this was extra special. I ordered a latte and was told they would bring it over to me. Sinking into the wicker and cushioned chair, I already felt relaxed.

For the next couple of hours, I didn’t think about work, the murder or the disaster which was my love life. I immersed myself in another world by reading a book. My favourites were crime and romance, which was the story of my life right now. I’d spoken to one of the friendlier staff and asked if someone could let me know when my room was ready. I wanted to enjoy the facilities and had been told I could use them, but I preferred to get changed in my room, and not some shared area for day visitors.

The room was spacious with a king size bed. It was all I needed for one night. I’d booked the second cheapest room. You didn’t want to come across as cheap, but there was no point spending an extortionate amount of money for a larger room when all you would do in it was sleep. I put all the free toiletries in my bag and replaced them with the ones I’d gotten on special from Asda. The miniatures were handy to use on weekends away. Given I now knew I’d have some time to myself from the end of January, I was tempted to plan a trip. I hadn’t been away for longer than a week since I’d met Saskia. She’d been with the same company since she’d left school and worked her way up to a senior position, earning a criminal amount of money as a stockbroker. Why was I thinking about Saskia? She didn’t even like spa breaks. It was something I always had to do on my own and would usually result in an argument. Why did I want to spend time alone? Wasn’t she good enough for me? And all the rest. I always believed it was important for couples to spend some time apart as well, but then what did I know about relationships?
